Omagh Wheelers Cycling Club was formed back in 1999 when a number of cycling enthusiasts came together witht he ambition of promoting the sport of cycling in the Omagh and surrounding area.
Mickey Gallen was the first ever chairman of the club. He was supported by Seamus Keenan as club secretary and other enthusiastic committee members such as Margaret Curran, Laura McAleer, Mickey McElduff, Terry McCabe, Philip Caldwell and Leo McKenna. Mickey Gallen also introduced Gallen Vehicle Hire as the club’s main sponsor for several years and he remains a stalwart of the club to the present day.
From the outset Omagh Wheelers has always aimed to promote a healthy balance of both touring and racing events and promoted almost 40 events events in 2013 including the prestigious All-Ireland Vets/Junior Time Trial Championships & the Junior/A3 Road Race Championship.
The Club’s flagship racing events are the McCann Cup, and the Tour of Omagh 3-day. This McCann Cup, sponsored by Hugh McCann Building and Maintenance Contractor, boasts an entry of around 300 cyclists across five races. The Tour of Omagh 3-day, which sold out within 3hrs in 2012, has grown in demand each year, and also attracts cyclists from across Ireland.
On the leisure scene, the Southwest 200 is the most challenging events, covering 200miles across 2 days. The Western Hills Sportive also tests riders endurance and determination, with 100 hilly miles to tackle.
Omagh Wheelers is greatly indebted to all those who have unselfishly volunteered their time and efforts over the years and to the many sponsors for their kind support. Together they have enabled the club to be voted ‘Club of the Year’ by Cycling Ireland in 2013, and have made a significant contribution to the strong cycling culture that has now taken hold in the local area.
